Itinerary
Day 1
Visit to new Martinair Head Quarters building designed by Paul de Ruiter. This in combination with a lecture of McDonough & Partners about the plans concerning the area around the Martinair building.
William McDonough and his architecture and community design firm, William McDonough + Partners, ground their work in Cradle to Cradle Design, a philosophy developed by McDonough and German chemist Dr. Michael Braungart in their 2002 book, Cradle to Cradle: Remaking the Way We Make Things. The goal is to frame design as "a beneficial, regenerative force—one that seeks to create ecological footprints to delight in, not lament. This concept can be seen in the Ford Rouge Centre’s green roof, which along with storm-water management benefits also creates habitat for birds.
Boat tour starting at the Rijksmuseum. The boat tour takes you along the eastside of the Docklands and we will bring a visit to the north side of the docklands, to Search (www.search.nl). We will have a meet & greet with the Royal Institute of Dutch Architects (BNA) as well.
SeARCH Architects is established in 2002 by Bjarne Mastenbroek and Ad Bogerman. Before SeARCH Bjarne Mastenbroek has worked in the Van Gameren Mastenbroek project team which was part of the “architectengroep in Amsterdam” since 1993. Currently the Executive Board of SeARCH consists of Bjarne Mastenbroek & Uda Visser. Consisting of 20 international architects, designers and staff members, SeARCH develops architectural and urban projects and does research on architecture, landscaping, urbanism and new building products and materials. SeARCH collaborates with different disciplines to experiment and test the results of collective design sessions in order to give an opportunity to innovative, original and unexpected proposals. Although having various scale levels all design tasks are handled with the same weight of importance and are parallel examined and developed from first sketch. For this reason the separation between architecture, landscape, urbanism, detail or technique and interior is not relevant for SeARCH. This does not mean that a task cannot exist only within one of these scale levels. Important however, is the good and careful connection in between scale levels around.
The Royal Institute of Dutch Architects, known for short as the BNA, is the professional organization of architects in The Netherlands. Its predecessors, the 'Society for the Advancement of Architecture' and the 'Association of Dutch Architects' (of which H.P. Berlage was a leading figure) were founded in 1842 and 1908 respectively and merged to form the present Institute in 1919. The Institute received royal patronage in 1957. The full title of the Institute is 'Koninklijke Maatschappij tot Bevordering der Bouwkunst Bond van Nederlandse Architecten'; the abbreviation BNA relates to the latter part of this name.
Foreign architects and the BNA
What can the BNA do for foreign architects? Every foreign architect who is listed in the Dutch Architects’ Register and can show proof of sufficient practical experience is invited to become a member. The BNA issues a booklet in English giving a bird's-eye view of how the profession is practised in the Netherlands. Foreign architects first entering into practice in this country are strongly recommended either to work in a Dutch office for a while or to enter into partnership with a Dutch colleague. A local partner will be familiar with the national legislation and local regulations, can provide invaluable contacts and give guidance on unwritten rules. If you intend to enter into a contract for a single project, you may find it useful to ask the BNA for their framework contract which has been translated into English. The BNA will be glad to assist in finding a suitable partner for the job and give you further advice.
